Geothermal Heating and Cooling
No matter where you live, the temperature throughout the year varies. In some areas, that can mean extremely hot summers and frigid winters, and in others you might experience a more constant temperature all year long.
In New England, we experience a variety of weather patterns, however it seams winters are getting colder and summers are getting hotter. What many people don’t understand is that the temperature in the ground, regardless of the climate or season, stays fairly consistent throughout the year.
How geothermal systems work?
Geothermal systems transfer fluid through the ground via closed or open-loop piping in order to exchange energy for use in heating and cooling applications. Although the temperatures from the ground are fairly constant, they are not suitable to heat or cool a space on there own. Therefore, ground-source heat pump units are installed inside of the house to bring the temperatures to a usable state.
Heating
During the heating season, heat is extracted from the ground and transferred into the house or building. Once the system pulls heat from the ground, it then gets transferred into warm air or water to heat a space. In water applications, radiant floor heating systems that operate at lower temperatures than traditional baseboard or radiator systems are typically used. The same heat transfer can be also used for domestic water heating applications.
Cooling
During the cooling season, the transfer of energy is reversed – creating cool, dehumidified air throughout the home. Instead of extracting heat from the ground, heat is removed from the home or building and either injected back into the earth via the piping loop, or used to preheat your domestic water heating system.
